Moving beyond 12-step-focused treatment means addiction providers need to embrace all pathways to recovery. This presentation will evaluate how several addiction professionals have done this in their personal lives, have advocated for their agencies and the field to do the same, and how their work is supported by research and subject matter experts in the field. It will also give practical ways that agencies can move closer towards fully embracing a recovery-oriented system of care approach that isn't focused on just one pathway towards recovery.
Learning Objectives:
Describe at least three barriers individuals in recovery face when their recovery pathway does not align with traditional 12-step models.
Identify practical strategies for making addiction treatment programs more inclusive of diverse recovery pathways, including harm reduction, medication-assisted recovery, and self-directed approaches.
Explain how recovery identity can evolve over time, and apply this understanding to support professionals and individuals navigating alternative paths in recovery.
