Families raising youth with behavioral health challenges face daily stressors that strain well-being, stability, and caregiving capacity. Behavioral health respite care reduces caregiver burnout, enhances family cohesion, and prevents the need for higher cost treatment interventions. Yet, behavioral health respite care remains underutilized, misunderstood, and inconsistently available. Drawing on findings for the Ohio Children’s Alliance groundbreaking new white paper, Best Practices in Community Behavioral Health Respite Care for Children and Families, this session will provide attendees with actionable policy and practice recommendations for strengthening and expanding behavioral health respite services.
Learning Objectives:
Define behavioral health respite care and its benefits in promoting family stability.
Identify at least two strategies to improve family’s access to behavioral health respite care.
Describe at least two approaches to support scalable and sustainable behavioral health respite programs.
