Patients experiencing disruptions in access to controlled substance prescriptions, including opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, or medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), may face overdose, withdrawal, unmanaged pain or emotional distress. This poster highlights ASTHO’s quick reference guide for on-site support personnel, including public health, behavioral health, peer support, and clinical staff, who may be engaged during a disruption. The guide provides tools such as responder checklists, communication tips, and referral pathways, supported by infographics and real-world use cases. Attendees will gain actionable strategies to strengthen crisis response, support patients during disruptions and adapt these resources within their own organizations and communities.
Learning Objectives:
Explain controlled substance prescription disruptions and the risks they pose to patients.
Identify practical tools and strategies for supporting individuals who have lost access to their controlled substance prescriptions.
Describe the roles of on-site support personnel, including clinical, behavioral health and peer support staff in reducing risks and promoting care continuity.
