Director, Division of Health Innovation & Integration
Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation | CMS
Rockville, Maryland
Karin E. Bleeg, MPH, is the Division Director for the Division of Health Innovation and Integration at the CMS Innovation Center. Since joining CMS in 2014, she has led Medicare and Medicaid innovation efforts focused on integrated care and the development of alternative payment and service delivery models for populations with complex needs. In her current role, she oversees a portfolio of behavioral health and substance use disorder (SUD) models and initiatives, including the Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model, which focuses on improving care for Medicare, Medicaid and dually-eligible adults with moderate to severe mental health conditions or SUD through specialty behavioral health practice transformation and payment innovation.
Over the course of her time at CMS, Ms. Bleeg has helped design and implement models aimed at improving care for populations with complex health and social needs. Her work began in Medicare accountable care organization initiatives and later expanded into Medicaid-focused model design and implementation through the Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) Model and the Integrated Care for Kids (InCK) Model. In these roles, she worked closely with state Medicaid agencies, providers, and community partners to strengthen integration across behavioral health and physical health, improve care coordination and case management, and support children and pregnant people affected by opioid use disorder and related upstream drivers of health.
Prior to joining the Innovation Center, her research and community-based work focused on Latinx health disparities and community-driven approaches to addressing food insecurity. Ms. Bleeg holds a Master of Public Health and a Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate from George Washington University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies from the University of Washington.
