Special Education Teacher, tMHFA Instructor, YMHFA Instructor
Mount Olive Township School District
Rockaway, New Jersey
My name is Travis Hubert and I am a Special Education Math teacher at Mount Olive High School in Flanders, New Jersey. I completed my undergraduate work in Biology and Animal Behavior / Psychology at William Paterson University and received my teaching certificates through Rutgers University. I am currently attending Centenary University’s Graduate program, working towards my Master’s in Special Education and LDT-C certification. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, hiking and photography.
As a Unified and Special Olympics bowling coach, I strive for the inclusion of everyone both inside and outside of the classroom setting. These programs help to build a welcoming school community, one based on true friendship and teamwork for not just my athletes, but for the entire student body.
In over 15 years working in education, I have dedicated myself to my students, making sure their needs are met- both academically and in their social emotional wellbeing. Having been in school districts where students have passed from suicide, I am determined to making sure no student falls through the cracks and feels trapped in crisis situations. As one of our district’s Teen and Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructors, I am able to help facilitate the education of our students and staff around mental health. Through our lessons, we can have open discussions and build authentic student relationships in our classrooms in an effort to end the stigma around mental health and ultimately help end the epidemic of youth suicide.
Henry Adams is attributed to saying, “A teacher's greatest lesson isn't found in the curriculum—it's found in the way they make students believe they matter.” My goal as a teacher is to create this welcoming classroom environment where everyone feels safe, valued and accepted. I hope to do this in a way that brings out the full potential of each and every one of my students where they feel they can spread their wings and achieve any dream they put their mind to.
