Dr. J. Craig Allen is a founding member of the Medical Directors Institute for the National Council of Mental Wellbeing. In Connecticut, he serves as Medical Director of Rushford Center, Chief of Psychiatry at MidState Medical Center, and Vice President of Addiction Services for Hartford HealthCare. As Co-Chair of Hartford HealthCare’s Opioid Stewardship Council, Dr. Allen leads a bi-monthly systemwide case conference on complex substance use disorder treatment and organizes the health system’s annual opioid symposium.
At the state level, Dr. Allen sits on the Advisory Board for the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and co-chairs the Treatment Subcommittee of the Alcohol and Drug Policy Council. He is also a past President and current Executive Council member of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
Dr. Allen is triple board-certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Adult Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine. He has held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and Yale School of Medicine and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Quinnipiac University’s Frank H. Netter School of Medicine. He is actively involved in teaching, serving as a core faculty member in Rushford’s ACGME-accredited Addiction Medicine Fellowship, as well as training Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows and Psychiatry Residents from Hartford HealthCare’s Institute of Living.
A dedicated clinician, Dr. Allen provides direct patient care at Rushford Center and in his private practice in Madison, Connecticut. Nationally recognized for his leadership, he lectures and advocates widely for prevention, screening, early intervention, and equitable access to treatment for substance use and co-occurring psychiatric disorders across the lifespan.
