F4 - Physician Supervision of Advance Practice Professionals: A Focus on Key Strategies and Clinical Collaboration

The collaboration between physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) is essential to meeting the growing demand for high‑quality healthcare. Physicians bring extensive years of training, deep medical expertise, and diagnostic experience that form the foundation of safe and effective patient care. At the same time, increasing patient needs, workforce shortages, and system complexity make it impossible for physicians alone to meet the demands of modern healthcare delivery. Advanced practice providers play a critical role in expanding access, improving continuity of care, and supporting team-based practice. Effective collaboration occurs when physicians and APPs clearly understand their respective training, strengths, and scopes of practice and work together in a structured, respectful, and clinically aligned model. Multiple care delivery models have been studied and shown to improve outcomes, efficiency, provider satisfaction, and patient access when physician–APP collaboration is intentional, well-defined, and evidence-based.
